Kelda Announces Opposition to SOPA/PIPA

January 15, 2012

MADISON, WI – Today, Kelda Helen Roys announced her opposition to SOPA/PIPA.

“These bills should not be known as SOPA, but should be called SOCA: Stop Online Commerce Act“ said Roys.   “These bills represent yet another avenue of assault on Internet freedom.  Without any due process, private corporations would be able to erase websites off the Internet.  Placing such unprecedented power in private hands is simply unacceptable, and must be stopped.” said Rep. Roys.  “The increase in economic opportunity offered by a free and open Internet has transformed our world.”

Kelda Helen Roys stands firm in her belief that both SOPA and its Senate companion PIPA should be killed in their entirety.

“These bills reveal such a profound lack of familiarity with even basic Internet operating technologies that the influence of corporate donors is all too clear. These bills were written by and for narrow corporate interests with a sole focus on increasing revenues. While Congress should address piracy and its impact on content creators and copyright holders, these bills go too far.  Creative professionals deserve a more thoughtful, narrowly tailored approach to ensuring that they can earn a fair share of online revenue for content they create.  The big corporate interests behind these bills already exert too much influence on Congress, which is one of the many reasons I refuse to accept corporate PAC money in my race for Congress.”

On January 18th, Kelda for Congress will bring down the website currently available at www.keldaforcongress.com from 8 AM to 8 PM CST.  Visitors will be informed of the impacts of SOPA/PIPA on Internet freedom and commerce, and will be directed to contact their representative to voice their opposition.
